Vatican City

The smallest and independent state in the heart of Rome.

There are many interesting attractions to visit in the Vatican City. However, the most famous ones are St. Peter's Square, St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican Museums, and Sistine Chapel.

My first visit to Vatican City was in 2004. I was hoping to see the Pope, but he didn't appear one of those days. Luckily, I was able to mingle with some priests and deacons and have taken photos with them.

My second visit was with Mary and Joshua.  It was Mary's 25th birthday, and she wanted to spend it in Rome.

St. Peter's Square is "one of the most renowned squares in the world." The square serves as the place where people gather to receive the Pope's weekly blessing.  In front of it is St. Peter's Basilica.  At the center of the square is an "ancient Egyptian obelisk.

The Sistine Chapel is the official residence of the Pope. It is called "one of the Vatican City's greatest treasures and is one of the most impressive tourist attractions." The walls and ceilings were designed by Michaelangelo.

St. Peter's Basilica is one of the world's holiest catholic shrines. Thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit this place, especially during Holy Week.

The Vatican Museums display works from the most renowned Roman sculptures and masterpieces of Renaissance art in the world. To watch these immense works of art is jaw-dropping.

The Pope has a personal army, and they are called the "Pontifical Swiss Guards."  The changing of the "Swiss Guards" is a sight to watch. Tourists are entertained by how they march and how they do it.

We celebrated Mary's birthday in Rome. I brought her 25th birthday candles all the way from the US, and we bought her a piece of cake.

I am grateful for so many blessings, particularly the chance to travel to Vatican City on our birthday month that year.  I would go back for another thanksgiving trip one day.
