South Africa
My trip to South Africa was about a short meeting with Nelson Mandela.
According to statistics, South Africa is the world's 24th most populous nation. Its three capital cities - Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town, are based on their governmental powers.
Johannesburg or the locals call it "Joburg" or "Jozi," is the second biggest city in Africa. It is known as the "city of gold" because of the history of the gold rush in 1886.
There are many reasons to visit South Africa, particularly Johannesburg. But, just like some countries, it has its beauty and imperfections.
One recommended tour is the Soweto City and Apartheid Museum tour. It will take you to the most famous township in South Africa to learn about their history and culture and travel to one of the poor towns to meet the residents. And you would have a chance to see the former house of Nelson Mandela.
When I hear of South Africa, I relate it with Nelson Mandela.
So who is Nelson Mandela? "He was born in a tiny village. His father died when he's nine years old. Soon after, he was adopted by a high-ranking official who began grooming his role within the tribal leadership. Mandela was a leader of peaceful protests in racially divided South Africa. His actions landed him in prison for three decades before becoming the first black president of South Africa. After retiring, he remained a devoted champion for peace and social justice in his nation and around the world, until his death at the age of 95."
Mandela is one of the most inspirational figures in the history of the world. I believe in his principles and wisdom.
I want to share my favorite inspirational quote from this man who "believed in the power of the human spirit to overcome impossible odds."
His quote says: "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up." Quite self-explanatory. Simple words but hard to follow, right?
Did you know that the airport in Johannesburg is the busiest airport on the continent of Africa? According to the records, an estimate of 28 million passengers passing through its terminal every year.
I spent some hours at the Emperor's Palace. This casino is similar to the big hotels in Las Vegas. It's a good place to enjoy a fancy meal and cocktails.
My ride with South African Airways was a significant part of my amazing African trip. I had a big surprise.
As soon as I settled on my seat in the middle of the plane, a flight attendant told me that they were moving me to a different seat. I followed her and found out that they were giving me a seat in first class. That was a nice treat! They must have found out that it was my birthday - maybe? Thanks for the unexpected blessing!
When you travel by yourself, sometimes you meet strangers who are also traveling solo. It's interesting to know why some people travel alone.
This nice lady is from Australia, a widow, and has started to travel again. So cheers to us. Cheers to me for the first class seat and more travel adventures!
The beginning of my milestone trip started here in South Africa and ended here as well. It's a wonderful trip of a lifetime. It has opened a new chapter of my life, a new journey, a new adventure, and a new mission.
