Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of the 14 U.S. continental territories. It is a small island in the Caribbean but rich in history, culture, and adventure.

The Old San Juan was founded in 1521 by Spanish settlers. This rich history of Old San Juan is represented by two fortresses.

The first one, La Fortaleza, was constructed in 1533. It currently serves as the governor's mansion.

The second one is El Morro that sits on the corner of the islet of Old San Juan. During the old days, this fortification was a military outpost for Spain and the United States. The construction of El Morro commenced in 1539 and was finished in 1790. As a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898, Puerto Rico became a U.S. Territory.

El Morro, now a museum and the Walled-City of Old San Juan, are UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is a historical architecture that greets cruises as they dock and sail in the harbor.

Flags waving on the bay welcome cruises all over the world and visitors to the island. The place has an inviting ambiance and friendly people.

Watching these huge cruises docked, planes passing by, and people enjoying their visit are few experiences of my trip. The sights and sounds of this place is a combination of history and the modern era.

I didn't get to visit these fortresses, but I always have a reason to come back. I waited for the sun to set - to witness how the sky changes its color on this beautiful island.

My short visit also covered a relaxing day at the pool and on the beach with a Caribbean drink. I was glad to taste a local ice cream; Coconut is always a favorite choice.

I visited Puerto Rico on Thanksgiving weekend when the cold weather in New York has started to arrive.  To see a snowman on the beach means winter is coming on the other side of the world.

I always need to remind myself that comfort and joy are in our own personal zone.  Sometimes, we have to find it in a far place, but sometimes it is in our own backyard.  It is a personal choice, a belief, and a lifestyle.
